The end of this chapter, the start of a new one
Over 10 years ago, we ran our first chapter-led workshop in Vancouver, BC. In 2024, we ran our last one, on the other side of the country, in St. John’s, NFLD.
It’s with strategy and a hint of serendipity that we share the end of this chapter: the closure of Canada Learning Code’s chapters.
Canada Learning Code has always been driven by a mission to make technology education accessible and impactful for everyone. As part of our ongoing commitment to this mission, we are making a shift to focus on national-level programs and initiatives that will allow us to amplify our reach, deepen our impact, and align more closely with Canada’s evolving workforce needs.
The decision to close our local chapters was not made lightly. Over the past few years, we have observed significant changes in how communities access learning opportunities. The growing accessibility of virtual programming, coupled with the need to address systemic barriers at a national scale, has prompted us to reevaluate how we deliver our programs. Our new approach will centre on providing equitable access to industry-recognized certifications, targeted career development pathways, tailored support and curated resources designed to help individuals advance in their careers.
This shift will allow us to provide more focused comprehensive support directly to adult learners, particularly from equity-deserving groups, to secure new or enhanced roles in technology through the development and growth of our new platform, the Career Collective.
Closing chapters allows us to focus our resources on building a robust, scalable model that addresses critical skills gaps and provides learners with the tools and networks they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. While this change marks the end of a chapter in our history, it is also the beginning of an exciting new phase of national impact and opportunity.
We remain deeply grateful for the contributions of our chapter leaders, volunteers, and community members who have been instrumental in fostering local learning communities over the years. Their dedication and passion have set the foundation for this next step, and we look forward to continuing to support learners in Canada through our reimagined programs and initiatives.
Thank you to Canada Learning Code’s chapter volunteers
Since inception, regional chapters have guided much of our work — where we operated, what types of content we delivered, and what events we ran.
Over the course of the last 13+ years, an incredible 40 chapters have operated throughout Canada. At its peak in 2018, 32 chapters were actively delivering workshops in their regions.
Your time, expertise, and unwavering commitment have enabled countless learners to explore, grow, and thrive in the world of technology. Whether teaching workshops, mentoring participants, or supporting events, you have been the driving force behind creating welcoming, inclusive learning environments in communities throughout the country. As we embark on this new chapter, we carry forward the impact of your work, which has laid the foundation for countless opportunities for learners nationwide.
Thank you for being an integral part of our journey and for inspiring us every step of the way. Because of you, more people are inspired to learn more about computer science and how they can create with technology.
