Module 1: Google Apps for Your Business

This Module is designed to get learners comfortable using a Google Account. It builds practice on using Google Apps that allow others to connect (like Google Calendar), and walks through how to manage a budget using Google Sheets.

  • Workshop 1: Getting Started With Your Google Account (EN) (FR)
  • Workshop 2: Using Google Applications to Connect and Collaborate (EN) (FR)
  • Workshop 3: Using Google Sheets to Manage a Budget (EN) (FR)

Contingency:
If you suddenly do not have access to internet.

Workshop 1:

  • You will not be able to download slides.
  • Slide 10 – 12: You will be able to do offline by showing the slides, screenshots, and prompting discussion.
  • Slides 13 – 16: You will not be able to complete this offline. However, you send learners access to the slides after the workshop when you have email access. Or, if you have the slides on a USB you can transfer the PDF version of the slide to their computers (if they brought their own).
  • Slides 17 – 27: If you have set your Google Drive to be available offline, you can complete these steps by walking the learners through on your screen. If you have not set your Google Drive to be available offline, you can refer to the slides and discuss these steps via the screenshots. Option: to discuss what tools or actions are similar to other doc programs/apps like Word Document or Notes on Slide 25.
  • Slide 31: You will not be able to complete this activity. You could write a 5 sentence paragraph on a piece of chart paper, and have everyone in the group edit it at the same time at the their group table to show the effect. As well, if you have access to opening docs offline via Google Drive, show them a document that is frequently used by team members. An example is the Content List for CodeMo’s.
  • Slides 32 – 45: You will not be able to run offline. You can create discussions about each of these steps. For example: Which attraction would you choose? And have the learners draw a photo versus sourcing one on the internet.
  • Stretch Goals: You can do Powerpoint Karaoke, but have learners do a paper prototype using paper and markers. Note that the components of Google Slides won’t be possible.

Workshop 2:

  • Slides 2 – 3: You will not be able to download the slides.
  • Slides 10 – 22: You will be able to do offline by showing the slides, screenshots, and prompting discussion. However they won’t be able to open or complete the activities unless Calendar has been made available offline.
  • Slides 26 – 28: You can discuss features of Google Hangouts and etiquette. Alternatively for an activity: ask learners what might be a good resource to build to remind you of etiquette. What would it have on it? What would you add? Have them create a paper prototype of reminders for etiquette – similar to table toppers that we use for Signature Events!
  • Stretch goals: You will not be able to complete the stretch goals offline. But you can walk learners through the screenshot steps.

Workshop 3:

  • Slide 2: You will not be able to download the slides to transfer to a USB.
  • Slides 9 – 22: You will be able to do offline by showing the slides, screenshots, and prompting discussion. However, they won’t be able to open or complete the activities unless Sheets has been made available offline. You can discuss the functions of ways that you could tackle the issue using the screenshots.
  • Slides 24 – 28. Paper prototype or come up with a budget as a group and what to include.
  • Slides 29 – 39: You will be able to complete this by showing the screenshots and and prompting discussion. However, they won’t be able to open or complete the activities unless Sheets has been made available offline. You can discuss the functions of ways that you could tackle the issue using the screenshots.
  • Stretch goals: You will not be able to complete the stretch goals.

Special Considerations:

  • Learners can will be sending an email to you. If this makes you uncomfortable, the alternative is to have them send emails to each other. Here is a template for an email policy outline in (EN) and (FR) to use with learners if they are sending emails. (Workshop 1, Slide 42)
  • Stretch Goal Powerpoint Karaoke (Workshop 1, Slides 51 – 54). This activity is longer than our other stretch goals. Make sure each group has at least 10 minutes each (5 to build ideas and slide deck, then 5 for presenting to the group).
